The Modi govt move to scrap Article 370 had won support of host of regional opposition parties like the BSP, BJD ,AIADMK, TRS ,AAP and YSRC , causing major set back to the bandwagon of congress and left groups in parliament .

The congress and the pro- Kashmir st groups in parliament like the SP , left parties etc put up a heavy tamasha , pandemonium in both the houses of parliament and raised anti BJP and anti-Modi slogans before staging walk outs in both houses of parliament .

Scrapping Article 370 would have required a constitutional amendment under Article 368. and also approval by the state legislature. The government, instead, used powers granted under Article 370(3) to make special status inoperative in J&K. Section 3 of Article 370 empowers the President to declare the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under the Article inoperative anytime. A Presidential Order was issued using this provision to implement Modi poll promise .

Article 370(3) reads, “Notwithstanding anything in the foregoing provisions of this article, the President may, by public notification, declare that this article shall cease to be operative or shall be operative only with such exceptions and modifications and from such date as he may specify”
