Tne CPI along with the TMC, NCP and BSP which played a major role in the Indian political journey stand to loose their national party recognition,The ECI has issued show cause notices to them after their dismal performance in 2014 and 2019 polls .

Only four parties have national recognition now -BJP,Congress, NPP ,CPM.

By securing two seats from Tamil Nadu, the Communist Party of India [Marxist] (CPM) is able to hold on to its status as a national party. While it’s cousin CPI has lost out its recognitionwhich will be effective from 20210 polls .

According to the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, a political party can be recognised as a national party if its candidates secure at least six per cent of votes polled in four or more states in Lok Sabha or assembly elections, and, in addition, it has at least four members in the Lok Sabha.The other condition of ECI are 2% representation in LS and and state party recognition in four states .

The CPM is holding on to the national tag due to the third clause – they are recognized as state in WB, Tamil Nadu,Tripura and Kerala.
