Elsewhere in India, Hum Do.. Hamare Do works. But, not in the state of Mizoram in the far corners of North East India. In Mizoram, the Church has announced monetary incentives for those having more children.

The Baptist Church in Mizoram’s Lunglei town has announced that it will give Rs 4000 for those couples that have their fourth child. If they have five children, they will get Rs 5000. The incentive will be incremental, ie.. Rs 1000 more for every additional child.

Mizoram’s churches are worried about the low population density in the state. It’s population density is 52 people per square kilo metre, which is the second lowest in India. Across the state, the churches have been asking the people to beget more childen. The churches are also against birth control measures as they feel that birth control is not needed in such a sparsely populated state as Mizoram.

Interestingly, promoting more children is not new to Mizoram. The Church has asked the people not to adopt birth control during 1975 and 1985 also. Even Mizoram chief minister had in the past supported removal of the two-child norm in the state. He had not just backed the churches, but complemented them for cooperating with the government in increasing the number of Mizos.

The church organisations are also felicitating those with more children. Mizoram is a 87 per cent Christian state with almost all Mizos practicing Christianity. Church is quite powerful in the state and it has deep and abiding influence on everything ranging from politics to social life.
