President Ram Nath Kovind has disqualified 20 AAP MLAs for holding office of profit. He disqualified them on the basis of the recommendations of the Election Commission.

Aam Admi Party, for which the decision is a major setback, said the constitutional authorities were behaving like the tools in the hand of the Central Government. The AAP has sought a stay on the EC recommendations by the Delhi High Court.

An angry AAP chief and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “There was some logic when God gave us 67 seats. The Almighty stood behind us in our every step. Otherwise we would have been nothing… Just don’t stray away from the path of truth.” The BJP, expectedly, backed the President’s decision. The Congress accused the AAP and the BJP of colluding by delaying the EC disqualification by a month. Interestingly, BJP senior leaders Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha backed the AAP.

It may be recalled that the Election Commission on Friday recommended the disqualification of the 20 MLAs has they were parliamentary secretaries and thus held offices of profit from March 13, 2015 to September 8, 2016.

The disqualified MLAs are: Adarsh Shastri (Dwarka), Alka Lamba (Chandni Chowk), Anil Bajpai (Gandhi Nagar), Avtar Singh (Kalkaji), Kailash Gahlot (Najafgarh) — who is also a minister — Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar), Manoj Kumar (Kondli), Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli), Nitin Tyagi (Laxmi Nagar), Praveen Kumar (Jangpura).
If the court does not rule in AAP’s favour, there would be bypolls for the 20 seats soon.
