During the last fortnight the Indian Government started massive troop build-up, deploying nearly 13,000 additional para military troops in the troubled State of Kashmir, stopped Amarnath Yatra, closed Educational Institutions, house-arrests of regional political leaders including three former Chief Minister’s of the State, while placing Kashmir on par with other States, duly revoking the Region’s Special Status. India withdraws region’s special status by the way of scrapping Article 370 which is almost present during the last seven decades in the form of Executive Order without bringing amendment to the Constitution of India.

During the first hour of today, the Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah read the order in the Upper House of Parliament stating that “in a bid to fully integrate its only Muslim-majority region with the rest of the country, the Government would scrap Article 370, a constitutional provision that grants a measure of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir including the right to make its own laws and to ensure equality to the residents of the State’ – “The entire constitution will be applicable to Jammu and Kashmir state,” Shah said.

India’s federal government announced the changes hours after a security crackdown began in Kashmir.

The government also lifted a ban on property purchases by people from outside Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for Indians to invest and settle there like any other part of India. The government also said it would split the state into two federal territories – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Phone, Text and email services were suspended and movement of public in the main Srinagar city was restricted since midnight. The divided Himalayan region is claimed by both Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan as both the Countries have experienced war twice after the independence in 1947.

While the Left parties staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, lamming the Modi government for scrapping Article 370, Mr Ram Madhav, general secretary of the ruling BJP, referred the Government’s actions as a “glorious day” and celebrations were planned across the country. Even the Political parties may express their concerns in a different manner, we have to wait for the response from the Region during the days to come.

Meanwhile, the Five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council ie.,China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States have been briefed by the Indian government on the latest situation.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in a tweet, said, “Pakistan condemns and rejects announcements made today by the Indian Government regarding Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir- ”We intend to firmly highlight our stance in our meetings with the US delegation visiting Pakistan and with the International Community at large.”
