The Delhi Police on Monday arrested three alleged terrorists, including one of the NIA’s most wanted, Mohammad Shahnawaz Alam. Alam is a 31-year-old engineer who escaped from police custody in Pune in July 2023. He was arrested in Jaitpur, Delhi, along with his two associates, Mohammad Rizwan Ashraf (28) and Mohammad Arshad Warsi (29).

The three men are suspected to be part of an ISI-sponsored module disguised as an ISIS module. The police seized incriminating material from the suspects, including those suspected to be used in IED fabrication. All three accused are engineering graduates and were in touch with their Pakistan-based handlers.

The NIA’s most wanted list currently includes 40 individuals, of whom 10 are suspected to be involved in ISIS-related activities. Alam is the highest-profile arrest to be made by the Delhi Police in recent months.

The arrest of the three men is a significant development in the fight against terrorism in India. It shows that the security forces are vigilant and are able to track down terrorists even if they are disguised as members of other terrorist groups. The arrest also underscores the threat posed by ISI-sponsored terrorism in India.

• Masood Azhar: The founder and leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a Pakistan-based terrorist organization responsible for the 2019 Pulwama attack.
• Zakir Naik: An Indian Islamic preacher who has been accused of inciting violence and radicalizing Muslim youth.
