Army Colonel, Major, J&K Police DSP Killed in Kashmir Gunfight

An Army Colonel commanding a battalion, a Major, and a Jammu and Kashmir Police Deputy Superintendent were killed in a gunfight with terrorists in the higher reaches of Kokorenag area in Kashmir valley on Wednesday. Two soldiers were also missing.

The gunfight broke out in the Garol area of Anantnag district in the morning hours of Wednesday, after security forces launched a counter-insurgency operation in the area following information about the presence of terrorists.

The Colonel, identified as Manpreet Singh, the Major, identified as Ashish Dhonack, and the DSP, identified as Humayun Bhat, were critically injured in the initial exchange of fire. They were later evacuated to a hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

The search operation for the two missing soldiers is still ongoing.

The killings have been condemned by the government and security forces. The Prime Minister’s Office has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.

The gunfight is a reminder of the ongoing security challenges in Kashmir. The security forces are determined to eliminate terrorism from the valley and bring peace to the region.
