Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged India on Thursday to take the killing of a Sikh extremist leader “extremely seriously” and work with Ottawa to “uncover the truth” amid a raging diplomatic row over the incident.

Trudeau, who is in New York to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, said Canada is not looking to “provoke or cause problems” with India, but that it is important to “shed full transparency and ensure accountability and justice” in the matter.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and one of India’s most-wanted terrorists, was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.

Trudeau has alleged that “agents of the Indian government” may have been involved in the killing, a claim that New Delhi has categorically denied.

The diplomatic row between India and Canada has escalated over the past few weeks, with both sides expelling diplomats. India has also suspended visa services for Canadians.

Trudeau’s remarks on Thursday were a sign that Canada is willing to de-escalate the tensions with India. However, it remains to be seen whether New Delhi is willing to cooperate with Canada in the investigation of Nijjar’s killing.

The situation is fluid and it is important to stay informed of the latest developments.tunesharemore_vertadd_photo_alternatemicsend_spark
