The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the kidnapping and killing of two students in Manipur. A team of CBI officials, led by the agency’s Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, will reach Imphal on Wednesday to begin their probe.

The decision to hand over the case to the CBI was taken by the Manipur government within hours of the photos of the deceased students going viral. The two students, Phijam Hemjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17), had been missing since July 6.

The CBI team will also include Joint Director Ghanshyam Upadhyay, who is already camping in Imphal. The team is expected to meet with the families of the victims and the Manipur Police to gather more information about the case.

The kidnapping and killing of the two students has sparked outrage in Manipur and across the country. People are demanding swift action against the culprits and an end to such heinous crimes.

History of the Case

On July 6, 2023, two students from Manipur, Phijam Hemjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17), went missing. They were last seen leaving their homes in Imphal to go to school.

The families of the two students filed a missing persons report with the Manipur Police. The police launched a search operation, but the students could not be found.

On September 26, 2023, photos of the two students’ dead bodies went viral on social media. The photos showed the students lying on the ground with bullet wounds to their bodies.

The Manipur government immediately ordered a CBI inquiry into the case. The CBI team, led by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, arrived in Imphal on September 27, 2023, and began their investigation.

    It’s so sad that future generations is being targeted for political differences and future of these young kids are ruined. Prayers for th le family going through trauma from such incidents.
