The Odisha Congress has decided to boycott the election for the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly on September 21, citing the coincidence of the date with Nuakhai, a major festival in western Odisha.

The decision was announced by Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra, who said that the party’s MLAs will not participate in the election process.

“The festival is observed for two days across the western region of the state. It is unfortunate that the Odisha government has called for an Assembly session for the Speaker election despite protests from the people. It is a step-motherly attitude towards western Odisha,” Mishra alleged.

The election for the post of Odisha Assembly Speaker has been lying vacant since the resignation of Bikram Keshari Arukha on May 12.

The Congress’ decision to boycott the election is likely to put the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in a comfortable position to elect its own candidate as the Speaker.

Nuakhai is a harvest festival celebrated by the people of western Odisha. It is a two-day festival that marks the beginning of the new agricultural season. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and show, and people from all walks of life participate in it.

The Congress’ decision to boycott the election for the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly on Nuakhai is likely to have a political impact in the state. It remains to be seen how the BJD reacts to the Congress’ decision.tuneshareGoogle it
